Brigade-General J Charteris becomes BEF Intelligence Chief (until January 24, 1918); his optimistic reports frequently mislead Haig.

African Fronts

Cameroons: French resume advance east from Mangeles, c. 600 British soldiers march south from Yaunde on January 5 where General Aymer­ich arrives on January 8.

Greece: Government protests against arrest of Central Powers’ Salonika consuls.
