World War One Diary for Tuesday, January 21, 1919:

Ireland: Sinn Fein Dublin Congress of Members of Parliament (except 36 in prison) convenes first Dail (Parliament) and declares Ireland independent; 2 policemen killed in Co Tipperary by 9 Irish Volunteers, ‘troubles’ resume. IRA lose 600 killed (more than British) by July 1921 truce.
Britain: General Milne’s December 1, 1918 final Salonika dispatch published.
